10U 2008 Blue Wins Three Rivers Cup

The Reston Raiders 10U 2008 Squirt Blue team played in the Three Rivers Cup tournament in Pittsburgh, PA (November 30th - December 2nd).  In the tournament opener, the Raiders were matched up with the Forest Hill Force (Toronto, Ontario) where they quickly jumped on top and established a commanding 4 to 0 lead after one period.  With solid play in all zones, they eventually ran away to a convincing 8 to 0 win. Playing against the Monroe City Eagles (Rochester/Scottsville, NY) in their second game, the Raiders again got off to a fast start with two goals in the first period and added four in the second to earn a solid 6 to 2 win. In the third game and final of the first round, the Raiders faced the Steel City Renegades (Pittsburgh, PA) who were also unbeaten to this point.  Steel City opened the scoring with a goal early in the first period - the Raiders had scored first in their first two games of the tournament. The Raiders responded and evened the score midway through the period. Reston then added two more goals in the second to create a little separation. Steel City stayed close and added a goal in the third while the Raiders iced it with an empty netter late to settle it at 4 to 2. In a game that had a lot of stops, starts, and whistles, Reston grinded out the win to earn the number one seed in Sunday’s championship game.  Playing Steel City again for the championship, the Raiders won in dominant fashion with a no doubt about it 5 to 0 victory. For the tournament, all forwards had at least a point demonstrating a balanced attack while the defense/goaltending was stingy allowing just four goals in four games. Reston Raiders 10U 2008 Squirt Blue shook it up in the Burgh!

12U Selects Win the Liberty Cup

The Reston Raiders 12U Select team played in their first tournament of the season: the Liberty Cup Winter Classic November 20th - December 2nd.   The team gave a dominant performance and went undefeated in the opening round- finishing in second place in the standings and beating the competition 9-0, 4-0 and 9-1.  Playing against the Wissahickon Warriors in the semi-finals, a closely fought first period finally gave way in the second and third  to a 9-1 victory for the Raiders. Facing the first place Mimico Canadiens from Ontario, everyone in the arena knew they were in for a great championship game.  Mimico scored first, but our team quickly came back and jumped out to a 5-1 lead.  However, Mimico fought all the way back through a very competitive 2nd and 3rd period, but ultimately our team killed off several penalties by playing a box well and getting some outstanding play from key players, leading to an 8-6 victory.

The Raiders 12U Select team is: Sam Baglivio, Ricky Bandi, Eamon Carew, Robert Converse, Tripp Duchak, Lukas Fitzpatrick, Jack Hume, Will Jenkins, Zac Jordan, Connor Kelly, JoonWon Lee, Zack Martin, Brady Nicholas, Will O’Sullivan, John Palmieri, Oscar Persky, Zac Van Horn, Sam Walker

Congratulations to all the players and coaches!!

10U 2008 Silver Wins Congressional Cup

Reston Raiders 10U 2008 Silver team played in the Congressional Thanksgiving Classic on their home ice over the holiday weekend. Facing Ashburn Selects in their first game of the weekend, the Raiders lost 5-6 in the last minutes of what was a competitive back and forth game. That loss spurred two victories the next day, first against the Richmond Generals in an early morning game where the Raiders crushed the competition with a 15-6 win, and second in a must win game against the Haverford Hawks where the Raiders won a convincing 6-0 game to make it to the Championship round. Sunday morning the Raiders took on the Ashburn Selects again and came out determined to get a win. The Raiders stepped up to the challenge, shut down a few of the competition’s key players, attacked the neutral zone and played the best team game to date. Raiders brought home the championship with a 5-2 victory.

The Raiders 10U 2008 Silver team is: Aaron Chen, Marcus Chun, Maya Dutton, Zach Fairbanks, Charles Fortner, Campbell Hegerty, Gabriel Huang, Clara Kang, Michael Lowen, Jr., Brenden Mullaly, Michael Murphy, Ethan O’Brien, Will Odell, Akshay Setty, Sienna Sung, Owen Taylormoore and Dylan Van Horn.

Congratulations to all the players and coaches!!
