10U 2007 Blue Rocks-Out in Cleveland

Tenacious back-checking, steady defensive play and timely saves, all lead to the Reston Raiders 10U 2007 Blue team holding all 5 of their opponents scoreless this past weekend at the Rock ‘N Roll Cup in Cleveland, Ohio.

The weekend started with a win Friday against the Westmoreland Eagles from PA, the team got off to a fast start after their 6 hour bus ride scoring in the first 9 seconds of the game. Up early Saturday morning, Reston faced the Buffalo Bisons and once again started strong with a goal in the first 10 seconds.

Mid-day Saturday was left open for parents and players to explore the area. Most took advantage and ventured to the Great Lakes Science Center and/or the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame on Lake Erie, while others visited “A Christmas Story House” and lifted the leg lamp like the trophy they hoped to win on Sunday.  The final game Saturday saw Reston continue its hot streak with a win over the Oakland Jr. Grizzles from Troy, Michigan, a northern suburb of Detroit.

Sunday morning the Raiders faced off against a local team, the Winterhurst Warriors in the semi-finals. Despite ‘home field’ advantage, the boys were victorious earning a spot in the Championship.  The Championship game matched Reston against the Essex Ravens from Ontario who traveled across the border, around Lake Erie for the weekend. A very spirited game generated lots of excitement on the ice, as well as in the stands. The Raiders were Champions after a hard fought 4-0 Win!

The adventures did not end there! A 6+ hour drive home was unfortunately delayed several hours (4 to be exact for extra team bonding) as the charter bus decided to let loose; a hose that is. Once a new bus arrived and sustenance received at a local Chipotle, they were back on the road and arrived in the wee hours of the morning (2AM) which was most unfortunate for the parents that had to work Monday, but OK with the kids that were off anyway!

Congratulations to the RRHC 10U 2007 Blue Hockey Team!

Raiders Family Picnic 2017

Wow!  What an awesome picnic! Great way to kick off the new hockey season!  I would like to give special thanks to some of the people who made it the success it was!  Thank you to Janet and Dave Fishman for supervising the entire thing (Janet, I won’t ask you to cut the cake again).  Kudos to the 16U Blue team as they turned out in full force to work the picnic.  Coach Crespy and Manager Julie Stallings must be great leaders to inspire such volunteerism!  And wasn’t it so cool to have Elliot in the Morning Emcee our event?! His whole family was there supporting the club at the picnic (and in the raffle – which  I am not supposed to mention)!  Speaking of the raffle, Coach Linda and our pro shop guru, Jim Sykes, need a thank you for the private lesson and the stick!  They are our honorary Raiders, for sure.  And Darren’s team with Goalie Academy, Progressive Hockey Development & UnReal Ice never disappoint!  As if that wasn’t enough on the hockey fun, we had a great showing from Shaylun Young with Elite Hockey Science Reston.  None of this would have been possible without the amazing staff of Skatequest and their loaners.  Of course, our vendors were the best yet again.  Thank you to Glove Stix (they don’t stink!), Impact Mouthguards (a lot to smile about), Dixie Bones, and Hop on Pops.

Thanks also, to our Board Member and House Program Director, Jodi McDermott, for organizing a great event once again!!

Women's College Hockey to Be Showcased Again

Last January, NCAA Division 1 Women’s Ice Hockey games were played for the first time in the DC area as St. Lawrence University faced off vs. Mercyhurst University in a two game set at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in the inaugural D1 in DC series hosted by the Washington Pride. Former Raider and current St. Lawrence player Maggie McLaughlin played in the games and scored her first collegiate goal on the Kettler ice!
D1 in DC returns this season to Kettler for a special four game slate over Thanksgiving weekend featuring four of the top teams in Women's Division 1 College Hockey: the University of Wisconsin, Boston University, Northeastern University and Minnesota State University.
This is an excellent opportunity for all RRHC players and parents to see hockey played at a very high level. Of note, the games will include Washington Pride alum, Veronika Petty, who's in her Freshman year at Northeastern University.
