10U 2008 Squirt Blue Claims Top Spot as 12U Pee Wee A Champions

The Reston Raiders 10U 2008 Squirt Blue team participated in the Buffalo Winter Classic Cup in Buffalo, NY (February 1 - 3). In a week where almost two feet of snow was dumped on Buffalo and temperatures ranged from -1 (Friday) to the mid 50s (Sunday) during the weekend, the Raiders played three of their four tournament games outdoors.  With the extreme winter weather conditions and playing up an age division, 10U 2008 Squirt Blue more than held their own.

The Raiders faced off against the AHU Knights (Gilbert, AZ) in their first game and took an early 1 to 0 lead.  However, Arizona took a 4 to 1 lead in the final period. Reston battled back but came up short in a narrow 4 - 3 loss.  The Raiders went undefeated the rest of the way as they went on to post shutouts against the Buffalo Bisons of Buffalo, NY (4 - 0) and Cheektowaga Warriors of Cheektowaga, NY (5 - 0).  In both shutouts wins, the action stayed in the opponent's end for the majority of each game while Reston minimized any scoring threats. The Raiders were the only team in the division to register any shutouts.  The only other hiccup during Reston’s championship run was a 2 - 2 draw vs Aurora Ice (East Aurora, NY) in game 3.  In their final three games of the tournament, Reston allowed just two goals while piling up 11.  Reston Raiders 10U 2008 Squirt Blue shook it up in the Queen City!

Coaches:  Steve Job, Jon Cooper, Jason Reynolds, Kris Ptak, Norm Faas; Reston Raiders 10U 2008 Blue players: Jonah Bellis, Philip Zurn, Jack Hanson, Carter Faas, Colin Cestaro, Sohil Kadam, Calvin Wood, Andy Zhang, Embry Eddy, Dylan Job, Gavin Mullen, Riley Shiner, Chase Bourommavong, Owen Kinsel, Alex Ptak, Max Reynolds, Trevor Cooper

10U 2009 Blue Wins New Year's Ice Cup

The Reston Raiders 2009 Squirt Blue team played in the New Year’s Ice Cup at the Northwest Arena in Jamestown New York from January 4th to 6th.  The facility is home to the Jamestown Junior Rebels, giving our kids a chance to play in a small stadium setting for game 1 and eventually the championship game too.  Game 1 against the Pittsburgh Arctic Foxes 2009 AA team was back and forth, but the Raiders 09 Blue team was up 2-0 after 2.  The team held off a late surge by the Arctic Foxes and preserved a 4-3 win.  Game 2 was against the West Seneca New York Wings 2009 AA team.  The Raiders jumped out to another quick 2-0 lead and were able to hold on, winning 6-4 including an empty netter.  With the win, the Raiders were assured a slot in the championship game.  Game 3 had us face off against the home town Jamestown Lakers.  The Raiders came flying out of the gates, establishing an early lead with 4 goals in the first and never looked back in route to a 10-0 win.  In the championship game, back on “the big rink,” the Raiders broke out to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first against the Pittsburgh Arctic Foxes.  As expected, Pittsburgh never gave up and started to chip away at the lead and eventually tying at 3-3 early in the 3rd.  With just over 7 minutes left in the game, the Raiders picked up a loose puck at our blue line, found a lane up the middle and beat the Arctic Foxes’ goalie to take the lead for good.  The 2009 Raiders Blue really came together to earn the championship as a team, winning the championship game 4-3 and taking home the New Year’s Cup!

12U 2006 Blue Wins Liberty Cup!!

The Reston Raiders 12U 2006 Blue AA team made the trip to Philadelphia over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend and came back with the Liberty Cup championship.  The Raiders opened the tournament with a 2-2 tie against Team Philadelphia followed by a 4-2 triumph over the Long Island Gulls.  On the second day, the Raiders played a very physical game against the Warwick Wildcats and came out ahead 2-0.  In the final game of the preliminary round, the Raiders beat North Park (NY) 6-2 to finish on top of the standings at 3-0-1.  After waiting out the rest of the preliminaries, the Raiders were all set for a Championship Monday rematch with Team Philadelphia.

The Championship game was a battle between two very skilled teams.  After a scoreless first period in which the Raiders had to kill off two minor penalties, the Raiders opened the scoring early in the second.  From there, the Raiders ratcheted up the pressure, buzzing the Team Philly net with several top quality chances but it wasn’t until midway through the third period when the Raiders added a second goal to the board and then put the Liberty Cup on ice with another goal late in the final stanza.  Final score: Reston Raiders 3 Team Philadelphia 0.  Winner, winner . . . Cheesesteak dinner!

The members of the Reston Raiders 12U 2006 Blue AA team are: Hunter “Snoop” Bauer, Kai “Stonewall” Blevins,  Alex “Bovi” Bovim, Max “Coozy” Cusick, Graham “Habby” Haberl, Pete “Puma” Kuligowski, Vinnie “Diesel” Lowery, Carson “Karma” Marr, Connor “Ninja” Morgan, Benjamin “Snortin’” Norton, Amadeo “Crowbar” Pivonka, Brendan “B-Rob” Robinson, Vincent “Salty” Scodellaro, Rocco “The Rock” Somma, Peter “Turnado” Turner, Christopher “Valksy” Valko, and Aleksey “Zubie” Zubarev.    The team is coached by Matt Scodellaro, Sean Turner, Matt Somma, Mikhail Zubarev, Chuck Robinson, Paul Norton and Mike Bauer and managed by Kelly Morgan.

10U 2008 Blue Wins Three Rivers Cup

The Reston Raiders 10U 2008 Squirt Blue team played in the Three Rivers Cup tournament in Pittsburgh, PA (November 30th - December 2nd).  In the tournament opener, the Raiders were matched up with the Forest Hill Force (Toronto, Ontario) where they quickly jumped on top and established a commanding 4 to 0 lead after one period.  With solid play in all zones, they eventually ran away to a convincing 8 to 0 win. Playing against the Monroe City Eagles (Rochester/Scottsville, NY) in their second game, the Raiders again got off to a fast start with two goals in the first period and added four in the second to earn a solid 6 to 2 win. In the third game and final of the first round, the Raiders faced the Steel City Renegades (Pittsburgh, PA) who were also unbeaten to this point.  Steel City opened the scoring with a goal early in the first period - the Raiders had scored first in their first two games of the tournament. The Raiders responded and evened the score midway through the period. Reston then added two more goals in the second to create a little separation. Steel City stayed close and added a goal in the third while the Raiders iced it with an empty netter late to settle it at 4 to 2. In a game that had a lot of stops, starts, and whistles, Reston grinded out the win to earn the number one seed in Sunday’s championship game.  Playing Steel City again for the championship, the Raiders won in dominant fashion with a no doubt about it 5 to 0 victory. For the tournament, all forwards had at least a point demonstrating a balanced attack while the defense/goaltending was stingy allowing just four goals in four games. Reston Raiders 10U 2008 Squirt Blue shook it up in the Burgh!
